I didn’t write a list of eligible works last year because, well, I didn’t have very many of them. It would hardly count as a list. Also, the biggest award that I pay attention to is the Nebulas, and I’m recusing myself this year due to briefly serving as President of SFWA.
Some of what I published in 2024 isn’t eligible or isn’t really in play. The Man Who Walked in the Dark came out in 2024, but it existed as a serial in 2023, disqualifying it for most awards. Devil in the Gravity Lounge is eligible, but it’s a sequel and not widely read enough to really worry about. (you should read it, though).
I only had one eligible short story in 2024. That’s The Skyvault Heist, which appeared in the August 2024 issue of Utopia Magazine. It’s the story of a heist in a flying zeppelin that never lands, and it’s framed by a police interview after the fact. I loved writing it, and it sold almost right away. I didn’t think it would get much attention after that.
So, I was thrilled to learn that The Skyvault Heist landed on the BSFA Award longlist. Sure, this is a long list. I’m still super excited to be on it. My story sits alongside stories from several of my favorite short story authors.
This totally made my day.
Now, back to work.
